When to Use a Separate Root Domain

If you have a single, primary site that has earned links,
built content, and attracted brandattention and
awareness, it is very rarely advisable to place
any new content on a completely separate domain.
There are rare occasions when this can make sense,
and we’ll walk through these, as well as explain how
singular sites benefit from collecting all of their
content in one root domain location.Splitting similar
or relevant content from your organization onto
multiple domains can be likened to a store taking
American Express Gold cards and rejecting American Express
Corporate or American Express Blue—it is overly segmented
and dangerous for the consumer mindset.

If you can serve web content from a singular domain,
that domain will earn branding among the minds of
your visitors, references from them, links from other
sites, and bookmarks from your regular customers.
Switching to a new domain forces you to rebrand
and to earn all of these positive metrics all over again.

Microsites
There is a lot of debate about microsites, and although
we generally recommend that you do not saddle yourself
with the hassle of dealing with multiple sites and their
SEO risks and disadvantages, it is important to
understand the arguments, if only a few, in favor of doing so

How SSL certificates work

Without getting overly technical and in-depth, your browser goes through
four basic steps to ensure that the connection is secure:
1. It checks the address of the site and its IP address against the details on
the certificate.
2. The server and the browser interact to determine what encryption types
they can both support and agree on one to use.
3. The server and the browser supply each other with unique codes to use
when encrypting and decrypting data sent between them.
4. The browser displays a confirmation in the address bar that the connection is secure, and all data is then sent encrypted.
When a connection is secured, it uses a slightly different connection protocol known as HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure (https). This replaces the
standard http protocol and you will notice that the web address now starts
https://.

If the https://is colored red, it means the site is attempting to
use the secure protocol but the certificate is not valid or not recognized so the
connection may not be secure.

Web hosting in the cloud
Cloud computing is all the rage these days and the hosting industry is no
exception. The basic idea of cloud computing is that you join multiple computers
together to provide faster, more reliable performance.
In terms of web hosting, that translates to meaning that websites get
delivered faster and don’t suffer from slow downs. When one website receives a lot
of traffic, the load is spread equally among multiple free web hosting servers in the cloud.

Virtual Private Servers
A VPS is the next step up from a standard shared server. With a shared
server, all of the sites share all of the resources of the server, and if one site
hogs the resources, all the other sites suffer.

Dedicated Servers
A dedicated server is exactly that a server dedicated to you. It is a
physical server in a data center which is yours and yours alone.

Makes a Web server fast-for website businesses

A Web server is usually rated by the number of
connections— brief communication sessions
between two machines — that it can handle in
a given period of time. The number of connections
that the server handles depends on how
quickly the server establishes a connection,
deciphers the request, sends the requested file,
and terminates the connection. Most people
assume that the most time-consuming step in
this process is the speed with which files are
transmitted. Surprise! When small files are
transmitted, the bottleneck is usually not how
fast the files are transmitted, but how quickly
the server’s hardware and software establish
connections for each of the file transfers, and
how fast the connections are terminated after
the transfer is finished.

Engineers and various hangers-on, such as
people who write computer-related books, like to
call the cause of a bottleneck a gating factor. For
example, the gating factor for completing this
book on schedule is the speed at which the
authors write. The gating factor in serving simple
Web pages is often the speed with which the
server can connect and disconnect, not the
speed with which data can be sent over the wire.
In addition to the speed of connecting and disconnecting
to other machines, the speed of the
server’s connection to the Internet makes a big
difference, especially for larger files such as
big graphic images. If you have a direct connection
to the Internet (as you find at most large
companies and most universities, your clientside
connection may be even faster than the
server’s connection: Lots of personal and small
business home pages are sitting on Web
servers with nothing but a 56 Kbps modem connecting
them to the Internet. So don’t start
cussing at your own modem when that full-color
JPEG photograph of the winning Weimaraner
takes forever to download; the problem may be
at the other end.

How to Create a Blog website

How to Create a Blog website

When you create a  blog website that has
complex formatting, or that mixes text
and graphics, you’ll want to test it in the
most popular Web browsers. Web addresses
from which you can download Microsoft
Internet Explorer, the America Online client,
the Firefox browser, the Opera browser, the
 Safari browser, or other tools.

Domain and Hosting In the case of a hosted
website or blog, the hosting and all its related
functions are done by another company. All you
get is the facility to build your site, without any
access to the powerful tools behind the scenes.
This has its advantages and disadvantages.
The biggest advantage is that you don’t have to
worry about any of the background functions
behind your site; you just get to do all the fun stuff.

Thinking about Your Site
The term hosting planactually defines the
 specifications of your hosting
account. The two terms, account and plan,
are sometimes used interchangeably to mean
the facilities and allowances you get with your
account from your web host.

cPanel
cPanel is the most widely used hosting system
and the most customizable. The cPanel control
panel is highly customizable and comes with various
preinstalled layout options. Many hosts even
allow you to select which of the basic layouts
you want to use. To change the format of the
 cPanel control panel.

Provide lots of links. One of the best ways to
share your interests is to share information about
Web sites that you like, as well as books and
other resources. You can put this list on your one
and only Web page or make it a separate page
that’s part of a personal Web site. If you develop
a thorough, carefully updated list of links for a
specific interest area, you create a very valuable
 resource for others.

Get organized.Think about how photos are
going to be organized.Basically, your site
should be like a magic photo album —
with new content at the front, and as many
older photos as you want at the back. So
use the home page to highlight the new stuff,
and keep the older stuff moving back into archived folders.

How creating Your Web Pages

It’s typical, when designing a Web site, to
use a top-down approach and to start
by thinking a lot about navigation, organization,
 navigation, and so on.

Your approach to creating Web pages
for a small Web site should be similar
to your approach to creating a single Web
home page. Each page should stand alone
as a worthwhile place for your Web visitors
to spend time, learn something, or have some fun.

One of the best ways to create a strong Web
site is to first create each Web page separately.
Make sure that each page has the information
you want, that it downloads in a reasonable amount
of time, that all the links work, and that
the page looks good. Then use the information
in this chapter to add navigation and make your
Web pages into a unified Web site.

What about consistency? Consistency is
important within a Web site, but not
that difficult to achieve if your site is only
a few pages to perhaps a dozen pages in size.
Use the same background color, text color, font, and text size
throughout your pages. If you use standard
HTML headers, bulleted and numbered lists, adsense optimized tips
and a few small images to break up your text,
your pages will have a consistent appearance.

Planning your Web site

The only tools you need for this part of the
 Web publishing process are Web
access, for doing research, and a word
processing and drawing program, or a
pencil and paper — whichever is more comfortable — for sketching your
plans and taking notes. A few extra hours upfront can save you a great deal of
time later and help you produce a better Web page; yet the planning step is
the most frequently overlooked part of the Web publishing process. To plan
your Web site, follow these steps:
1. Determine the purpose of your site.
Decide which type of site you want to
create: personal, topical, commercial, or comical.
I could also call the last two business and entertainment,
but those don’t sound as nice together.
After you decide what type of site you want,
research existing sites; then research other
media that serve the same purpose magazines,
brochures — even television. Ask yourself what

it is about your material, or about the Web,
that makes the Web a good way to get your
material out. Think some more about your own
needs and interests. Then write a few goals for your
initial site and for later versions of it.
2. Decide on the structure of your site and the layout of your pages.
The structure of your site can help guide visitors to the
parts that interest them most. A great layout of your site’s Web pages can make the
pages more useful, more interesting, or more entertaining, depending on
their purpose. Here are a few general rules:
• Decide how many pages to have and how they link to each other.
• Put the purpose of your site near the top of your home page.
• Indicate the purpose of each additional page near the top of that
page.
• Use headers, bullets, icons, and other graphical or emphasis elements to highlight key points.
• Think about what graphics you need. Start the process of generating or obtaining them.
• Use summary elements, such as a site map and a Frequently Asked
Questions FAQ page.

Creating Navigation

Navigation is what helps users find their
way around your Web site. If you
have previously put up a single Web home
page and are now expanding to a multipage
site, creating navigation is a new challenge for
you. But using navigation isn’t. Every time you
visit a major Web site, you encounter carefully
designed navigation. Luckily, for a small site,
consistent navigation is easy to achieve.

Hosting accounts-how to create

Hosting accounts also called hosting plans are very
different from domain names. Your hosting account
gives you space online to house your website.
It’s like leasing a building.

If you lease a building to use for your business,
that building becomes your business address.
You can move your business to another building, taking
your name with you at any time. You aren’t
stuck in one building forever just
because that’s where you started.
You purchase a hosting account from a web
 host or hosting provider and,
although it is often purchased in conjunction
with a domain name, it is
independent of the name.

The term hosting planactually defines the
 specifications of your hosting
account. The two terms, account and plan,
are sometimes used interchangeably to mean
the facilities and allowances you get with your account from
your web host.

The difference between a hosting account and
a domain name is an important distinction to note.
When it comes time to renew your name registration and
hosting account, you must make sure you renew
both. Just because you renew your hosting plan
doesn’t automatically mean you renew your name
registration. In real-world terms, it’s like saying
 that renewing your business license
doesn’t mean you have paid your rent.

    Conceptualizing Web Hosting
For any website to be available for viewing on the World Wide Web, it has to
be on a computer that is connected to the Internet. The computer your site is
on is known as its host.
The host can be any computer at all, anywhere in the world. Your computer
at home can host your website, if you want. You could also use a computer in
your office, in a warehouse, or even in a shed. All you need for the host are
     Power
     An Internet connection
     A dedicated IP address
Each computer or device that connects to the Internet has an IP address.
This address is unique and allows other computers on the Internet to find
you. It’s just as unique as the street address of your house. Most homes and
even some businesses have a dynamically allocatedIP address, which means
that their Internet Service Provider (ISP) allocates the person or business an
IP address each time a connection is made to the Internet. The IP address
could be different for every connection.
  • Publishing Your Web Pages-AdSense-how-to

Your approach to creating Web pages for a
small Web site should be similar
to your approach to creating a single
Web home page. Each page should
stand alone as a worthwhile place for
your Web visitors to spend time, learn
    something, or have some fun.

One of the best ways to create a strong Web
site is to first create each Web page separately.
Make sure that each page has the information
you want, that it downloads in a reasonable
amount of time, that all the links work, and that
    the page looks good.

You may want to take the design consistency
of your Web site to another level by adding
repeated graphical elements and a strong,
consistent approach to layout across all your
Web pages. This is the approach taken by the pros. We
suggest that, unless you have some design experience .

Compare your planned site to similar or competing
sites and revise your plans accordingly.
Create your site on your own machine first and test it thoroughly.
Carefully choose a Web service provider that will do the
best job of hosting your site.

Get your site up on the Web and begin an ongoing
    cycle of testing and revision.

    • Put navigational elements — links from your home page to other
pages in your site, and from other pages back to the home page —
in a consistent spot at the top or bottom of each page.

How ta Starting a Blog-Make Your Blog Work For You

Making money and driving traffic to your blog

    To begin, you will create a new Blogger blog;
    review and navigate the Dashboard;
and learn how to create, edit, delete,
and schedule posts. Posts are the
substance of a blog and should be regularly
published, not only to keep your readers
interestedin following your blog but to
    help improve your online ranking.
Use labels to categorize blog content with adsence
and allow visitors to quickly find
     what they are looking for.

A Google Search Box can also be added
to assist visitors in searching your site.
Once your blog is setup, add a personal
touch by adding a theme, adjusting fonts and colors, and
    adding desired gadgets sidebar items,
as well as learn how to install a custom banner adsense for mobile.

You may customize your blog’s settings Ads placement, such
as inputting your e-mail address to review comments,
modifying the Blog Description, adding HTML
to put your signature at the end of each new post, or
    setting up a custom domain.

It is important to design your blog with your
audience and purpose in mind, and then incorporate
that into the blog layout, color scheme, and overall functionality.

Furthermore, you’ll learn how to make money
with your blog. One of the most popular methods is
by using Google AdSense. Blogger has a
“Monetize” area of the Dashboard specifically to work with
Google AdSense. Many bloggers also add affiliate
links to their sidebars where you can make money
from referring others to a service or product you
    personally use, like, and recommend.

When you insert images into your Blogger
blog, they are automatically stored to a
    Picasa Web Album.

You may also create and link to additional
albums. However, when adding an image
to separate your blog posts, a custom
banner or background, you may not
want them added to your gallery and included
with other graphics posted to your blog.
Instead, we’ll review how to use
    Google Sites to store, manage,
    and use images.

    Creating a Blog

The first step in creating a blog is to create a name.
Although Blogger allows you to change your blog’s
address once it is setup, it is important to take time
to think about a name before getting started. The
name of your blog should be related to the purpose
of your blog, whether it’s a personal blog about
yourself in general, goals you have accomplished,
a journey you are on, or a professional blog about a
service or product you provide. If you were blogging
about yourself, you may use your name as the blog
name and therefore part of your blog address.

    Web hosting in the cloud

    Web hosting in the cloud

Cloud computing is all the rage these days
and the hosting industry is no exception.
The basic idea of cloud computing is that
you join multiple computers together to
     provide faster, more reliable performance.

In terms of web hosting, that translates to
meaning that websites get delivered faster
    and don’t suffer from slowdowns.

When one website receives a lot
of traffic, the load is spread equally among
    multiple servers in the cloud.

Imagine it as a grocery store where,
if the lines at the checkouts get long,
    shelf-stackers and other staff from
around the store are summoned to
    temporarily open additional checkouts
    until the rush is over.

Cloud hosting has a couple of small
drawbacks, but they affect only the most
    security-conscious users. Some users
may be concerned about data security
due to multiple websites floating around
in the same cloud, and the potential
exists for a hacker to break an entire
cloud rather than one server, but for
the majority of website owners, the
advantages of the cloud far outweigh the
    drawbacks.

    Automating Functions with cron Jobs

    Automating Functions with cron Jobs

Think of cronas being short for chronology,
and it will help you see that it is for jobs that
are performed automatically on a fixed time
     schedule by theserver’s internal clock.
It’s like setting the timer to switch the heating on
before you get up in the morning or setting your
DVR to record the sameshow every week.

The command for a cron job basically has two parts:
✓ The command that the server should run:This means giving it the full
path to the file that you need to run and any switches that are needed to
perform the function. The software you run on your website should provide the correct switches to include.
✓ The exact time and schedule on which the job should be executed:
There is huge flexibility built into this system, meaning you can schedule
the task to run exactly when you want on whatever schedule you want.
cPanel provides an easy configuration screen for cron jobs. Here’s how to
    use it:
    1. Open cPanel and log in using the details your host gave you when you
    signed up.
    2. Scroll to the Advanced section and click Cron Jobs.
    3. If you want to be e-mailed every time any cron job runs, enter your
e-mail address in the first box and click Update Email.
    4. Select the schedule on which you wish the command to run.
There are some common settings to select from, or you can create your
    own schedule.
You must fill every box when setting the schedule; otherwise the cron
    job creation will fail.
    5. Enter the command you want the server to run into the Command box.
You must add the full server path to the file you want to run in the cron
job. The server cannot guess which folder the file might be in!
    6. Click Add New Cron Job to create the job and add it to the cron.

    Building a Marketing-Effective Web Site

    Building a Marketing-Effective Web Site

    presentation of information affects emotional
     response and thus influencesbuying decisions.
Designers ask about your target audiences to be sure to
select or create appropriate design elements.

While essential for any type of sales collateral or
     packaging, marketing communications is particularly
critical because of the short window for grabbing
attention on the Web. Experienced Web designers
intuitively adjust the font style, graphic style, colors,
images, and white space to have a positive impact
on your marketing process while reinforcing your brand.

How quickly can you identify the different
     demographics of the audiences for
these sites? Gender is obvious. What about
economic status? Can you identify any
     similarities between these sites?

Put your company logo on your Web site,
just as you would on any other
advertising or packaging; it’s an essential
part of your brand. If you don’t
have a logo, this is a good time to get one.
Ask your graphic artist to design
one for you, make one at sites like
LogoMaker.com, or search for free logosto
find the names of companies that sell logo
    software or inexpensive, pre-made
    logos.

Contentrefers to everything you provide for the
Web site, from written copy to photographs,
from product information for a database to a calendar of
    events.

People don’t read online; they scan to save time. That makes sense because it
takes 25 percent longer to read the same material onscreen than it does to
read it on paper. Because of the limitations of time and screen space, you
need to adapt your writing style for the Web. Try to follow these precepts:
Use the inverted pyramid.Use the journalistic convention of the
inverted pyramid, with the most important information at the beginning
of each page. Readers might never reach the end of the first paragraph,
let alone the end of the page.

Grab readers with headlines. Good headlines grab readers by the
lapels. Subheads help break up the text on a page, making it easier to
read. If you use a different font size, style, or color for your headings and
if your headlines or subheads include a search term, you might receive
extra points in search engine rankings.

Write strong leads. The first sentence on the page is called the lead.
Hook readers with benefits, telling them what they’ll find on your site,
store, or page. It improves search engine ranking to include three to four
search terms in the first paragraph.

Stay above the fold.Keep the most important information above the
fold— that is, keep it above the part of the page that users have to scroll
to see. Depending on the audience, perhaps fewer than 50 percent of your
visitors will scroll below the fold.

Avoid long, scrolling pages. Many short pages of 150 to 200 words are
preferable to a few long pages. If long text is unavoidable, consider creating HTML files that users can download and print out easily.

Alternatively, use the Frequently Asked Question FAQ format. At the
top of a page, create a list of links to anchor paragraphs text, often
below the fold, that viewers access from links at the top of the same
    page, without scrolling.

Limit use of PDF files. While designers like PDF files because PDFs preserve designs, this file format isn’t great for users. Generally, restrict PDF
files to distributing long documents intended for print, not for reading
    online.

WEB DESIGN AND MARKETING-FOR BUSINESS WEBSITES

    WEB DESIGN FOR BUSINESS WEBSITES

At a minimum, users should see a thumbnail
of the product. This does not have to be elaborate.
To avoid forcing users to squint, make sure that
the image is at least 150 pixels wide.

Providing a larger image when the thumbnail is
clicked is almost always a good idea. This
higher-resolution version should appear in a
new browser window, not because this
constitutes better usability which it really doesn’t,
but because people expect and accept this
functionality that has been perpetuated by
thousands of websites. This window can be
    loaded several different ways:

1.The simplest method involves adding the targetattribute to the anchor tag, such as
    <a href="/images/tractor-engine_large.jpg" title="View a higher resolution
    photo" target="_blank"><img src="/images/tractor-engine_thumbnail.jpg
alt="tractor engine" /></a>. This technique avoids JavaScript, which might be

disabled; the disadvantage is that the targetattribute is deprecated in XHTML 1.0
and beyond, and if included, will prevent the page’s markup from passing the W3C
    validator.

2.To open a new window while keeping the page valid, many developers use
JavaScript. A basic version would look like this: <a href="/images/tractor-engine_
    large.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href); return false;"><img
    src="/images/tractor-engine_thumbnail.jpg" alt="tractor engine" /></a>.

3.The previous JavaScript examples only load the images in a new window, but the
language also has the power to dictate the design of the browser window, such as
the width and height, whether the navigation items are visible, and whether the
window is resizable. Building off the previous example, a simple version might look
    like  <a href="/images/tractor-engine_large.jpg" onclick="window.open
    (this.href, 'popupwindow', 'width=300,height=400,scrollbars,resizable');
    return false;" ><img src="/images/tractor-engine_thumbnail.jpg
    alt="tractor engine" /></a>.

4.There are also many external scripts that handle this functionality as well. Roger
Johansson, author of the web design site 456 Berea Street, wrote a simple script
that loads any link with a rel="external"attribute in a new window, relegating the
    behavior to an external file.
    1
Lightbox, another good option covered later, is a
piece of JavaScript that loads images into a <div>that overlaps the main page. Both
ofthese prevent the JavaScript from being embedded in the HTML, so the page size
is kept small and the HTML remains semantically strong.
Generally, opening links in new windows is regarded as bad usability and accessibility practice, but in this case, users expect a thumbnail to open a new window with a larger image.
The one and only concrete rule about this entire discussion is to nevermake a thumbnail
link to an image that is not bigger. If a higher-resolution version with increased detail is
unavailable, do not link the thumbnail.

How to make a website with traffic

How to make a website with traffic

    1. Keep it Simple - Make sure the design is simple,
clear and pleasing to the eyes. Don't overcrowd
    it.
    2. Multiple Pages - If possible, divide the website into
several pages and access them through separate
items links on a menu or navigation bar.Free website templates download
    3. Be consistent - Have same menu or some extensionof
it on all pages so that viewers know where they are at
all times. Home is a must on every page.
Visitors should be able to easily look
    around your website.

If visitors are frustrated andcan't find what they are
looking for, they are likely to leave quickly and
never come back or recommend yourwebsite to
others. The menu can be located at
the top, left or right side of the page.

    4. Keep Content Fresh - Static content is dead content;
Write new articles, update old ones.
New orupdated content is a great way to keep visitors coming back. Search engines also rank websites with
fresh content higher. Keeping an active blog is a great way to keep your website new and fresh.
    5. Use Descriptive File Names - Use descriptive keywords as names for the files (e.g., pictures, videos)
on your site. This will help your site appear more with search engines - especially through Google
    Image Search.
    6. Create Links - Getting links to your website from other websites will help generate more traffic and
improve your placement in search engines. Find other websites on your same topic and put a link to
them on your site -- maybe in a new "Favorite Links" page. Then ask those websites to link back to you
    by signing their guestbook.
    7. Tag your Site - Adding tags can increase the number of times your website shows up in search
results. To pick the right keywords, try putting yourself in the shoes of your visitors and think what
they would search for if they wanted to find your site.
    8. JavaScript - If you are using JavaScript code, it can certainly help you spice up your web site.
However, there are many scripts that your visitors may find irritating. Try to avoid scripts such as
mouse trailers, mouseover sounds, mouseover pop up windows and mouseover redirects.
    9. Help Visitors Contact You - Make it simple for visitors to reach you if they want. Include a
guestbook or blog where they can post questions. Add a "contact us" form where they can submit
    questions to you via email.
